How it works

Choose your own SAP
You can pick any DOT-qualified SAP. If you're an FMCSA driver, designate that SAP in the Clearinghouse so they can report on your case.

Complete your evaluation and program
Your SAP evaluates you, in person or by live video, and recommends education or treatment. Finish everything they recommend.

Get your follow-up evaluation
Your SAP confirms you complied and reports that you're eligible for a return-to-duty test.

Arrange your return-to-duty test
Owner-operators can set up the test through a C/TPA. Drivers between jobs usually take it with the next DOT employer that hires them. Either way, it's directly observed and must be negative.

Your follow-up testing plan comes with you
Whoever employs you next, including your own company if you're an owner-operator, has to carry out the follow-up testing your SAP set.
No current or prospective employer?
FMCSA permits a driver without a current or prospective employer to register in the Clearinghouse as an owner-operator and designate a C/TPA for the limited purpose of completing the return-to-duty process. The designated C/TPA can direct the driver to take the return-to-duty test and report the negative result to the Clearinghouse.
